On August 26, thousands of people, dressed in all white will meet at a top-secret location for a mass outdoor picnic where they will enjoy an elegant dinner together. That’s right– Dîner en Blanc is returning to Birmingham for another year.

What is Dîner en Blanc?

Dîner en Blanc is an event that originated in Paris in 1988. Guests come together for a “chic picnic” dressed in all white to eat, drink, and enjoy each other’s company. Striving to encompass the elegance of high French society, the event always takes place on blocked-off streets where there is no car traffic or disruption. Guests are expected to bring their own picnic tables and chairs to set up at the location.

Beginning as a small, word-of-mouth event, today the event happens in 80 cities across 30 countries. This year will be Birmingham’s 4th event, with the first taking place in 2019.

Top-secret location

Another element that contributes to Dîner en Blanc’s allure is its elusive location. At the last minute, the event will reveal to its invitees where it will take place. Last year, it was at Railroad Park. This year, however, there are some clues that may reveal its secret location.

In last week’s City Council Meeting, the city passed a liquor permit for Dîner en Blanc Birmingham on August 26, 2023 at 22nd Street North from 1st Avenue North to 1st Avenue South.

What are the rules– and how do you get invited?

An event this exclusive and spectacular doesn’t come without some rules. According to their website, here are some standards guests must adhere to.

  • Guests must dress elegantly in all white head to toe– no ivory, beige or off-white
  • Bring your own picnic table and chairs
  • Champagne or wine only, no beer or spirits
  • Must be accompanied by a guest, no one arrives alone

How do you get invited, you might ask? Well, according to Dîner en Blanc, invitation takes place in three phases.

  • Phase 1: Members from the previous year, friends of the organization and leaders
  • Phase 2: Friends “sponsored” by phase 1 members
  • Phase 3: People who register on the waitlist

Registration for the waitlist is now open for those who are interested. The registration invitation phase will begin August 2, 2023.
