Birmingham natives Paul Rogers and Daniel Scheinert each won prestigious film awards this weekend for their work on the Oscar nominated movie Everything Everywhere All At Once.
On Sunday evening in London, England, Rogers won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for film editing. Twenty-four hours earlier, Scheinert and his co-director Daniel Kwan — “the Daniels” —won the top prize at the Directors Guild of America’s awards ceremony.
What is BAFTA?
The British Academy Film Awards, which is more commonly known as the BAFTA Film Awards, is the British version of the Oscars. BAFTA recognizes the best British and international contributions to film.
Honoring Women in His Life
A graduate of Homewood High School, in his BAFTA acceptance speech Rogers acknowledged the role of women in the field of film editing and the women in his life.
“I also want to say editing is an art form that was pioneered by women. All my editing heroes are women
All the big heroes in my life are women, so I want to dedicate this to my wife Becky, my mom, my grandma Judy, my two sisters—Taylor and Chancellor and my stepmother. And speaking of pioneers, Michelle Yeoh (the star of Everything Everywhere All At Once).”

Honors Keep Coming
Daniel Scheinert, a graduate of the International Baccalaureate School at Shades Valley received two BAFTA nominations for Best Director (joined by co-director Kwan) and Best Original Screenplay. Unfortunately, he was edged out in both categories.
Despite Sunday’s loss in London, on Saturday night, Scheinert and Kwan won the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film category at the 75th Directors Guild of America’s awards ceremony. According to Variety, winning the top feature film directorial honor has been the most reliable barometer for the Oscars’ best director prize.
Next Up: Oscars
The next big night for Rogers and Scheinert is the 2023 Academy Awards ceremony on March 12th.
Widely considered the best film of the year in 2022 by moviegoers and critics alike, Everything Everywhere All At Once continues to be the odds on favorite to take home multiple awards.
