1. Allman Farms & Orchards | Oneonta

Drive time from Birmingham: 45 minutes

Just 45 minutes from Birmingham, Allman Farms & Orchard is an easy little fall escape if you’re in need of some fresh air and an apple-filled afternoon. This family-owned farm has been around since the 1930s, and three generations of the Allman family are still working the farm today.

The orchard grows several apple varieties, so you can stock up on fresh-picked goodness while supporting a true local family farm.

2. Steele Orchard | Cullman

Steele Orchard is the kind of fall day trip we can get behind. About 50 minutes from Birmingham in Cullman, this family-owned orchard has been growing scrumptious apples since 1985, with more than 20 kinds to choose from.

The bakery is reason enough to make the drive. Think: Southern fried pies, apple cakes, cider, ice and caramel apples, plus homemade jams, jellies and apple butter to take home.

For a fall morning the whole family will enjoy, check out Scott’s Orchard in Hazel Green. The family-owned orchard sits along the Alabama-Tennessee state line and grows 18 types of apples across 100 acres.

Apple picking season kicks off on Labor Day 2026 and runs through mid-October 2026. Bring the kids, grab a basket and make a morning of it.
