BREAKING: Morgan Freeman and Luke Hemsworth to film movie in Birmingham this Spring

Legendary Oscar award winner Morgan Freeman and Westworld star Luke Hemsworth are set to film an action thriller this spring in Birmingham.

In response to Bham Now’s inquiry, Brian Jones with the Alabama Film Office confirmed the movie’s location.

The current title of the movie that will be filmed in the Magic City is Gunner.  The film will be directed by Dimitri Logothetis (Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxer: Retaliation), who co-wrote the screenplay with Gray Scott Thompson (The Fast and Furious).

The Plot

Below is an excerpt from the entertainment insider website Collider about the movie and the roles Hemsworth and Freeman will play:

“Gunner is an action thriller about a Special Ops veteran Lee Gunner (Hemsworth), who goes against a drug cartel after his two sons are kidnapped on a fishing trip. Gunner’s sons stumble upon a massive drug cartel operation which leads to them being kidnapped by the son of the gang’s kingpin Kendrick Ryker (Freeman). Despite being in prison, Ryker runs his organization successfully until he is faced with Gunner, who wreaks havoc on the gang in a bid to save his sons. Hemsworth’s character in the action thriller is described as an ex Special Ops operative with elite combat skills.”

Filming in Town

It is too early to know where the filming will take place in Birmingham, according to Jones at the Film Office.

The Magic City has been busy hosting another movie —The Shift— in January and February of this year.

Morgan Freeman also made news this week in Alabama when word got out that he has been supporting the Gulf Shores, Alabama Police Department as a volunteer.
