San Fransisco based Kaya Care Inc.(Kaya), a company that connects employees together to help build inclusivity and supportive mental health in the workplace, is moving to Birmingham after Alabama Futures Fund recently placed an investment in the company. Keep reading to learn more about the company and the reasons behind the move.
Kaya partners with employers who want to provide cohort-based mental health solutions to their underlying employees. Group sessions focus on themes like:
- diversity and inclusion
- current political and social issues
- wellness and meditation
- workplace skills
- trauma and healing
- emotional intelligence
Each group session is performed virtually and facilitated by a licensed clinician. Unlike other self-guided solutions or private healthcare offerings, all cohorts have a dedicated and licensed mental health professional assigned to them.
Prioritizing mental health
Kaya’s inspiration came from its founder’s own mental health experiences and firsthand experience of the power of connecting with other people.
Mental health, something once considered taboo in the workplace, is gaining recognition in everyday workplace conversations. According to their website, Kaya’s work is making a difference in the lives of employees:
“Group members report feeling more connected to others, supported by their employers, and leave with concrete skills to build resilience in the workplace.”Jamie Epstein, PsyD (as quoted on Kaya Care Inc. website)
A future in Birmingham
Among other reasons to move to The Magic City, Birmingham’s impressive startup community was definitely a factor in this decision to move.
Corey Anand, the Founder and CEO of Kaya Care, shared his excitement about the Birmingham startup scene.
“We are very excited to be a part of the Birmingham startup community. Partnering with Alabama Futures Fund is a fantastic opportunity and allows us to grow and scale our business in the mental health space. We appreciate all the support we have received from Birmingham thus far, and we look forward to building a future here.”Corey Anand, Founder and CEO, Kaya Care Inc.
According to the Birmingham Business Journal, the rich healthcare industry was part of Birmingham’s appeal, but the supportive community and fast-paced growth have also been a factor in deciding to stay and begin hiring in Birmingham.
“We’ve been raising our investment rounds and it’s been going well so far, and you know, a lot of that is coming from Birmingham and the attention that we’re getting really just makes sense for us to have our headquarters here, help build teams here, integrate with the education system.”Corey Anand, Founder and CEO, Kaya Care Inc.
