Meet the Birmingham Zoo’s new ADORABLE baby flamingos
Reading time: 2 minutes
We’ve got the sweetest news to start your week—The Birmingham Zoo has officially welcomed two new baby flamingos. Keep reading to meet Pinecone and Baron.
Meet the duo
Beyond being absolutely adorable, these baby flamingos are also breaking records at The Birmingham Zoo. For the first time, the Zoo’s flamingos have nested and hatched fertilized eggs.
Flamingos are monogamous. Both parents build a nest, then lay a single egg that the parents take turns incubating for about 28 days.
Named after the Birmingham Barons, flamingo chick “Baron” hatched on June 29. The next week, Pinecone hatched to another set of parents. The chicks will spend the next few months bonding with their parents, learning to feed themselves and growing more independent. Oh, and being cute.
To see the flamingo chicks for yourself, head to the Zoo’s flamingo lagoon.

A special connection to Birmingham
Pinecone and Baron have a special connection to Birmingham. In 2020, the Birmingham Barons donated infield clay from Regions Field to the Zoo’s newly-renovated flamingo habitat.
“It’s the mixture of sand with the clay that makes it a perfect consistency for flamingos to build their tall, mound-shaped nests. We were delighted when they began breeding and nesting in the early spring.”
Tiffani Thompson, The Birmingham Zoo, Assistant Curator of Birds
Cheers to a partnership that helps baby flamingos thrive!
“More than providing the nesting clay, the Barons continually support the conservation of wildlife and wild places by helping the Zoo to fulfill our mission. This strong relationship continues to grow in amazing ways.”
Chris Pfefferkorn, The Birmingham Zoo, President and CEO
