It’s here, Birmingham! Mayor Woodfin and TWG 2022 CEO Nick Sellers were joined by other city leaders at the ribbon cutting for The World Games 2022 this afternoon, July 7. Keep reading to hear what they had to say.

The final countdown

The wait is coming to an end. The World Games 2022 finally start tonight at the opening ceremonies. Today, Mayor Woodfin, along with Hoover Mayor Brocato, Birmingham City Council members and more, officially cut the ribbon and “let the games begin.”

“We are only a few hours way from kicking off The World Games 2022. As we stand together, we understand the importance of playing team. These games have not been on US soil in 40+ years. For the City of Birmingham to be in a position to host these games is truly an honor. We want to welcome all of you to Birmingham for a taste of Southern charm, Southern hospitality and an amazing city full of amazing people.”

Birmingham is ready

Birmingham is looking its best and ready for the exciting days to come. Leaders from both Birmingham and Hoover have worked together as one to have the city ready for TWG 2022.

“We have an opportunity to show the entire world what a great place Birmingham, Alabama is firsthand. We are going to see such a successful World Games because we are all in this together. We are all one city today and we look forward to showing that to everyone throughout the world.”

Finally, athletes from all over are one day away from showing the world what they’re made of. That has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of it all for Commissioner Joe Knight.

“Tonight starts an adventure that we started over seven years ago. So many athletes will be here and in each of their hearts is a burning desire to be the very best that they can be. After so much painstaking work from all of our partners here, it is fulfilling to us to allow these athletes to have that opportunity.”
