2. Mitchell’s Place

As a safe place for families in Alabama with a child on the autistic spectrum, Mitchell’s Place provides comprehensive, research-based services for those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities. 

They provide an early learning preschool with specialized staff, consultation services for schools, occupational therapy and more. This local nonprofit wants every child to thrive in the environment where they live.

3. Childcare Resources

Childcare Resources offers financial assistance for low-to-moderate-income working families and quality training and technical assistance for childcare providers. They also provide research-based parent education resources and assistance to hundreds of families in our community seeking quality child care options.

4. New Life Pantry

New Life Pantry is a USDA pantry providing for those who meet the qualifications of the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP).

5. ¡HICA! Strong Families Program

A local nonprofit for the Latinx population, ¡HICA!’s Strong Families program serves new immigrant families in Birmingham. As the first point of contact for people, ¡HICA! offers info and internal references to help families transition into their new community.

6. Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank

According to Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank, there are over 14,500 children under the age of five in Birmingham and 29% of our community lives below the poverty line, which is $24,250 for a family of four. 

Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank’s mission is to meet the diaper needs of families who are in need. They provide diapers to families at no cost.

7. Kid One Transport System, Inc.

Reliable transportation for children can sometimes be hard to meet because of environmental factors. Kid One is the only nonprofit of its kind in the state and one of only a handful of nonprofit transportation providers targeting children in the US.

8. Children’s Aid Society of Alabama

Since 1912, Children’s Aid Society has provided services to families in need or at risk by helping parents with the skills and resources they need to keep families together. When children could not remain with their own families, other homes have been provided through foster care or adoption.

9. On River Time

On River Time provides services to children who have suffered from abuse and neglect. This local nonprofit seeks to create new, positive moments for children by providing a two-day fly fishing camp. They also have a scholarship program to help children reach educational goals.

10. Hand in Paw

Hand in Paw is a local nonprofit that serves at-risk youth, struggling students and children with chronic illnesses by providing positive distractions from four-legged friends. They have professionally-trained volunteer handlers and animal Therapy Teams that Hand in Paw claims helps improve people’s day-to-day lives.

11. aTeam Ministries

aTeam Ministries offers spiritual, financial and emotional support to children and their families coping with pediatric cancer. They have a variety of programs including prayer teams, Home Away from Home lodging, financial grants, and numerous events and activities.

12. Christopher Kids

Christopher Kids is a nonprofit corporation that serves children by fostering hope and imagination through specialized, accessible and personalized spaces. Children are referred online and chosen to receive a space designed especially for them.

13. Magic Moments

Magic Moments provides children with non-medical opportunities such as a family trip to Disney World, meeting a celebrity of choice, or going on a shopping spree. They also provide ongoing events to enhance the relationships between their staff and families as well as relationships between families.

14. Red Barn

Red Barn offers therapeutic horseback riding for children with disabilities. They aim to foster a soothing atmosphere by offering Equine Assisted learning where children create special bonds with horses.

15. AIDS Alabama

AIDS Alabama wants to serve the underseen and vulnerable homeless youth population so that they have a stable shelter. The Way Station is designed to serve the very unique needs of homeless, runaway and at-risk youth. They offer counseling, housing skills and education services.

16. Children’s Alabama

Children’s Alabama serves the community and state by providing specialized care for all children regardless of their ability to pay. Children’s has world-class research and patient care while being a private, not-for-profit medical center.

17. United Ability

United Ability serves children with disabilities through their Hand un Hand Learning and Intervention programs. They provided comprehensive and coordinated care so children can thrive no matter what is going on in their life.

18. Better Basics

Better Basics’ mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and their families by improving literacy through their intervention and enrichment programs. In the 2020-21 school year, they gave out 32,000 books to children in our communities.

19. GirlSpring

GirlsSprings is a local nonprofit that provides access to reliable information, inspiring events and positive role models, so young girls can reach their truest potential.
