Seeking to step up your faith journey or to take part in local community-driven projects? You can do both—and more!—at Asbury United Methodist Church. Read on to discover what makes this church unique and how you can help them further their mission to make The Greater Birmingham Area a better place.
Then & Now
Asbury got its start in Birmingham in 1986 with Reverend Mitchell Williams. With 158 members, Asbury was envisioned as a church that would be truly open to all, would give generously to its community and would make faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
Today, Asbury has grown to 2,220 members, and while it still holds strong to its original principles, it has many exciting upgrades to know about. In February 2022, Asbury launched a new brand. The goal—to highlight its uniqueness and celebrate the many ways it serves the Birmingham community.
“One of the things I absolutely love about Asbury is how we come together to love and serve! Our congregation is eager to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our community and around the world. Asbury truly serves the Lord with gladness, and it is a blessing to see our church come together, again and again, to help others in any way needed. It is an honor and privilege to be a part of what God is doing here. The love of Christ compels us!”
Brooke Jackson, Missions Coordinator, Asbury UMC
3 areas of focus
So what makes Asbury unique? There are many things, but there are three areas they pay special attention to and those are worship, serve and grow. Here’s a look at how they do each:
1. Worship
At the heart of Asbury is their worship services. Led by male and female pastors, services are designed to welcome all. Here’s a look at the two types of worship services they offer each and every week:
Traditional Worship
Tradition and familiarity make up Asbury’s Traditional Worship service. Held in Asbury’s gorgeous sanctuary, you’ll follow and learn through teachings of scripture and music. On any given Sunday, you’ll see performances from the chancel choir, soloists, bell choir, orchestra and even children’s choir.
Modern Worship
Modern Worship services at Asbury are held in Williams Chapel and offer a more youthful, upbeat vibe with teachings of Jesus. Music is also prominent during these services with engaging, contemporary music from the church’s worship band.
(Find more on worship services below.)
2. Serve
Along with worship, Asbury strives to serve. In 2021 alone, Asbury donated more than $890,000 to local and international missions: 10% of its 2020 giving went to outreach for The United Methodist Church and another 10% went to the Greater Birmingham community through its Missions in Action program.
Ways Asbury serves:
- Asbury Community Respite Ministry: fellowship and stimulation to people living with memory loss due to dementia or stroke.
- Asbury’s Food Pantry: open to anyone in need Wednesdays from 2-3:30PM.
- Giggles & Grace Consignment Sale: biannual consignment sale benefiting local organizations.
- Mission of the Month: monthly mission projects designed to make a difference. Help Asbury collect 20,000 diapers for Bundles of Hope in April.
3. Grow
Asbury also seeks to help its members grow their faith through daily prayer and reflection through study of scripture. There are a number of programs available to help children, students, families and adults do just that, including Asbury’s new podcast not to mention Children are Special at Asbury (C.A.S.A.), a mother’s day out, preschool and pre-K.
