It can be tempting to automatically post a picture of the lost animals, but sometimes it’s best to post on social media that you found a lost pet with your contact information. Let people reach out to you and ask them to describe the dog. This way the pet can get to the correct owner.

BONUS: If you’ve picked up wildlife off the road, then check out this guide on the best course of action here.

2. Take to a vet

Hopefully, the lost pet belongs to someone, so the best course of action is to take the animal to the nearest vet. If the little guy has a chip, the vet can scan and get in contact with the rightful owner.

On the weekends it can be difficult to find an open veterinary clinic. Here are three vet clinics in the Birmingham area open 24 hours on the weekend.

3. Take to a shelter

Found a lost pet in Birmingham? The Greater Birmingham Humane Society has three separate locations where you can help an owner reunite with their animal.

P.S.: Taking an animal to the shelter should be the last option, according to the Shelby County Humane Society. After seven days of being surrendered, the animals at Shelby Humane will be put up for adoption.

Shelby County Humane suggests that you should complete a report on the lost pet on lost.petcolove.org, lostmydoggie.com or lostmykitty.com.
