Woodlawn’s new Book Nook remembers Lee Ann Petty
Woodlawn, it’s your time to cozy up on a couch and read a book from the new Book Nook by Better Basics. This Book Nook serves the Birmingham community, and it’s dedicated to the memory of Lee Ann Petty, an extraordinary volunteer who gave generously of her time and talents to support the Birmingham community.
Woodlawn’s very own Book Nook
Birmingham’s newest Book Nook just opened at the James Rushton Early Learning Center in the heart of Woodlawn. The Woodlawn Foundation helped find the location and install the Book Nook.
The Birmingham nonprofit Better Basics’ motto is “Take a book. No need to leave a book.” In partnership with the Junior League of Birmingham, Better Basics will keep children’s books in stock for community members to take and read. These nonprofits hope children in Woodlawn learn to love reading and the places and people they learn about through books.

Remembering Lee Ann Petty
It’s only fitting Better Basics dedicated this Book Nook to someone who worked to better Birmingham. No one is more deserving than Lee Ann Petty, who served as the Community Vice President for the Junior League of Birmingham for nine years. Though she passed away in December 2020, but the community still remembers her as a philanthropist and volunteer.
During her time at the Junior League of Birmingham, Lee Ann Petty worked with their community partners. She also helped organize projects with other 650 volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic to deliver services to those in need.
To honor her memory, her parents, David and Carol Petty, cut the ribbon at the ceremony for the Woodlawn Book Nook. Lee Ann loved reading, so her memory continues as children have the gift of reading in Woodlawn.
