Bham’s new power couple: Miles College and Lawson State
Reading time: 3 minutes
This isn’t your typical power couple rocking the red carpets of Hollywood. Instead, Miles College and Lawson State are making achieving a higher education easier (and cheaper) than ever.
The agreement
Miles College and Lawson State Community College have joined forces to help students further their education. Lawson State students and graduates who’ve received an associate’s degree (or completed 64 transferrable hours) with a 2.0 minimum GPA will be given admission to Miles College. The new agreement will make transitioning from Lawson to Miles easier than ever to earn bachelor’s degrees.
When you put two great institutions together, nothing but success can happen. . . At Lawson State we are laser focused on student success. That is our mantra, we live it every day. . . We see that this partnership with Miles College just represents another piece of that continuum toward student success.
—Dr. Cynthia T. Anthony, Lawson State Community College President

The benefits continue
The benefits don’t end at admissions though. Application fees will be waived for Lawson State students as well as a joint effort between Miles College and Lawson State academic advisors to ensure students receive ongoing support throughout their transfers.
This represents a partnership between my office and that of Dr. Cynthia Anthony. This means scholarships for [LSCC] students, joint programs and activities between our academic success centers, our educational programs and career development programs.

A dynamic duo — Miles and Lawson
Here is another reason why this major agreement between these historic institutions of higher education matter in the Magic City.
Miles College and Lawson State Community College are both HBCUs (Historically Black College or University). Miles is a liberal arts institution with a major focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Lawson State has two major program divisions: academics and career/technical. Their core values are student success, excellence, innovation, and integrity. The college’s goals include preparing students for college transfer, gainful employment, career advancement, and workforce development.
Our students now have an opportunity to experience a seamless transition from Lawson State into the pursuit of their four-year degree at Miles College. It is certainly a win-win for the students and both of our institutions.
