Just last week there was a hot Twitter debate about the best ice cream truck orders, and chief among them was the mighty popsicle. If you’re in the group who favors them, you’re in luck because Birmingham has several gourmet popsicle spots for you to try this summer.

1. Steel City Pops

Steel City Pops is a local favorite for handcrafted, gourmet popsicles. They have a wide range of flavors, including chocolate, coffee, strawberry lemonade and more. The Birmingham-based brand is now renowned for it’s cool and creamy pops (which you can get year-round, but let’s be honest, nothing is a satisfying as a popsicle in the summer).

My advice, check out this blood orange pop the next time you go.

  • Location: 329 Summit Blvd, Birmingham, AL 35243
  • Hours: Monday-Saturday 12-9PM, Sunday 12-8PM

2. Urban Pops

Not your average ice cream truck, Urban Pops offers gourmet popsicles, coffee and tea and an array of desserts. At their home in Hoover, Urban Pops’ popsicles are incredible, and you can order them on DoorDash (popsicles whenever you want? Yes please!). Some of their flavors include saffron, pista and malai kuli.

My recommendation: order the pomegranate popsicle on your next visit for fun fruit flavor.

3. Frios Pops

Founded in Gadsden and now headquartered in Mobile, Frios Pops is now one of the largest national popsicle brands in the US. You can find them all across the country in stores and traveling around in trucks. Their selection ranges from Nutter Butter to Pumpkin Cheesecake to your classic fruit flavors.

This army of popsicle trucks is a delight, and you can find them at popular locations around the Birmingham area, from the Montevallo Arts Festival to Mount Laurel.

Homemade with natural ingredients, these popsicles are a must-try. They offer a wide array of fruit flavors, from mango to strawberry and pineapple, plus they carry chocolate-dipped paletas.

When you go, try this strawberry-kiwi pop with whole kiwi slices.

La Nueva Michoacana has several exciting options for paletas at its location on Green Springs Highway. These run from coconut and lime to mango with chili and fruit in yogurt.

These mango-chili popsicles look 🔥. They’re definitely ones to try.
