Birmingham-area gas prices plummet before July 4th holiday
Reading time: 2 minutes

According to AAA Alabama, gas prices in the Birmingham metro area have fallen seven cents a gallon before the upcoming July 4th holiday weekend.
“Our state average is $2.80 per gallon. If you look at the Birmingham metro area today (June 30), it’s at $2.79 per gallon here around Birmingham. We’re about 30 cents a gallon less than we were the same time last year.”

Gas prices vary around Magic City
Gas prices vary greatly throughout the Birmingham Metro area, ranging from $2.99 a gallon in Birmingham’s Southside to a low of $2.36 at the MAPCO store on Highway 280 near the former Fresh Market.
The Birmingham Metro counties are pretty much the same (numbers from AAA):
- Jefferson County — $2.80
- Shelby County — $2.76
- Walker County — $2.78
- St. Clair County — $2.78
The highest gas price in Alabama is Perry County at $3.10. The lowest? Lauderdale County at $2.72.
“One thing to keep in mind is that it is against the law in Alabama to sell gasoline for less than you pay for it. So that tells you that they’re (MAPCO) not selling it at a loss. They’re still making a profit on it at that price.
It makes you wonder why they don’t all sell gas for that price range and that price level, and it gives you an idea of what their profit margins are.”
