1. It was Birmingham’s very first charter school and cultivates the whole child

Did you know Legacy Prep was Birmingham’s very first charter school? Located at 1500 Daniel Payne Dr in Birmingham, the school opened its doors in 2017 to 130 scholars in Kindergarten-2nd grades with a mission to educate and empower scholars to embrace their identity, lead lives of choice and opportunity and impact their communities as the next generation of socially-conscious leaders.

Legacy Prep also cultivates the whole child by providing daily Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), the opportunity to connect with feelings and classmates as well as set an intention for the school day.

Since its opening, Legacy Prep has expanded each year to include a new grade level—something the school plans to do until it is home to Pre-Kindergarten-12th grades. This year, Legacy Prep will provide education to Kindergarten-4th grades.

What exactly is a charter school? Here are some fast facts:

  • They are independently run, tuition-free public schools.
  • They hold similar demographic characteristics to scholars in local public schools.
  • As a smaller school, they are nimble and responsive to scholars and families.

2. It provides a strong focus on reading and comprehension

Having strong reading and comprehension skills plays a huge role in a child’s success in school and life. This is why Legacy Prep’s daily curriculum includes 2 hours of targeted reading instruction per day, including one hour of whole-school Guided Reading.

This means that whatever your child’s reading level is, they are grouped with schoolmates who are on the same reading level, regardless of what grade they are in.

What’s the magic in this?

  1. It accelerates reading growth for those reading above grade level.
  2. It provides intentional intervention for those reading below grade level.

3. It offers unique programs for a broader education

While many schools focus on the three R’s, Legacy Prep offers a broader education by providing scholars with access to two unique Exploratory Arts classes each school day. These classes cover a broad range of areas, including:

  • Art
  • Dance
  • Martial Arts
  • PE

Another area of study is Quest, which is centered around project-based learning and beginning Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts for early elementary school. This is a pro because it gives scholars a broader education as well as a leg up in STEM.
