Chef Peoples Cafe coming to the old site of Avondale’s Hot Diggity Dogs

Avondale’s gaining a new restaurant. Earlier this year, Hot Diggity Dogs closed its doors and left us wondering who or what will take over the space. Nine months later and our questions are finally answered. Chef Peoples Cafe is set to open later this year and we’ve got the deets.

Chef Cecil Peoples has been in the Birmingham food scene for quite a while now. With over 40 years of experience in the food industry and as the former president of the Birmingham chapter of the American Culinary Foundation, let’s just say he knows what he’s doing. You may remember him from Avery’s that used to be located in the Harbert Plaza where he was the former executive chef. He’s come a long way since then.

Chef Peoples is the owner of Peoples Choice Discount Catering—a catering company that offers healthier, nutritious options for your events. Don’t let the “healthy” label fool you though. The menu features some of your favorite Southern, home-cooked meals…just cooked to offer a bit more nutrition.

“What inspired me to open Chef Peoples Cafe is my love for fresh vegetables and homestyle cooked meat and desserts. You can’t find places like that no more. We will offer at least 4 meats and 6 vegetables daily. when one runs out we replace it with something else.”

A little bit about Chef Peoples Cafe

This July, Chef Peoples signed a 3-year lease at the former Hot Diggity Dog location in Avondale (4028 5th Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35222). If you haven’t been here, it’s on the second floor of Fancy’s on 5th. If you have been here, you know that the space is small. Despite the size, Chef Cecil is ready to serve Birmingham quality food at affordable prices. According to Peoples’ Facebook, the cafe will also be partnering up with neighbor The Marble Ring to serve food at the speakeasy.

There will be limited seating, but you can always get your food to go. They’re also looking into outdoor options when the weather permits.

Chef Peoples Cafe will be a meat and three style restaurant. The menu will evolve everyday so you’ll always have something new to try whenever you visit.

You can expect options like Fried Chicken, Beef Lasagna, Stuffed Bell Peppers, Greek Baked Chicken, Seafood Gumbo, Meatballs and so much more. It’s like taking a trip to your grandma’s house.

If your stomach’s not already growling, the Cafe will also have homemade desserts every day that will be no more than $5. That way you can satisfy that sweet tooth on a budget.

I’m sold. When will I be able to eat here?

The Cafe is set to open Tuesday, September 22. Here are their hours:

• Tuesday-Friday: 11AM-3PM & 5PM-9PM
• Sunday: 11AM-7PM

The Cafe is also available to rent out for small, private dinner parties. Whether you’re planning a birthday, reunion or just for fun, the intimate space will be all yours.
