Alabama Symphony Orchestra performs Handel’s Messiah at a holiday concert Dec. 20, 7PM at Alys Stephens.

Here’s a glimpse of the ASO Chorus rehearsing Handel’s Messiah.

There’s something thrilling about listening to the ASO Chorus performing Handel’s Messiah. For over 20 years, they’ve been performing this timeless holiday classic to enthusiastic crowds.

Choral singers from across Alabama come to sing with the ASO Chorus, including choral soloists Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk, Emily Jaworski, Roderick George and Corey McKern.

I spoke with mezzo-soprano soloist Emily Jaworski, who’s also a professor at UAB, about what audiences can look forward to during the show:

“It is going to be a spectacular show! The music is gorgeous, the orchestra is wonderful, the chorus really shows the whole gamut of what a group of singers can do; their music is joyful, tender, and sometimes virtuosic. I’m always amazed at the hard work that choir members pour into learning this very dense piece with precision and joy.”

There will be songs and storytelling, both celebrating the richness of our state. Featured artists include local favorites Three on a String, actress Dolores Hydock, and solo artist Caleb Clark.

Here’s what Bobby Horton of Birmingham-based Three on a String had to say about his favorite part of the concert:

My favorite part about the show is playing with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. These people who play in our symphony are world class. To be in their presence is one thing. To have that wonderful sound coming out behind you is like nothing I’ve ever done.
