New bar concept: Neon Moon opens in Birmingham in spring 2020
Reading time: 4 minutes
The owners of Queen’s Park are at it again! Get ready for their newest endeavor Neon Moon—a neighborhood cocktail bar coming to Birmingham in 2020.
The Concept
Neon Moon will add another neighborhood cocktail bar to Downtown Birmingham. It will specialize in draft and package beer, whiskey, fun cocktails and a small menu of snacks.
Inside the 1500 square foot space, you’ll find retro details like wood paneling, checkered vinyl floor tiles and retro barstools.
Neon Moon will also include an outdoor patio, which will be perfect for warm weathered days.
“I’m looking forward to Neon Moon being both a neighborhood bar and a destination, a place where people can meet up with friends and neighbors. I love the familiarity of neighborhood bars, that whole Cheers-esque, everybody knows your name kind of thing, and I hope that Neon Moon becomes that for the neighborhood.”

The Owners
If you don’t know about the owners of Queen’s Park or its owners, you will be amazed many things. Here are some things to know about the bar and its owners Larry “Mudd” Townley and Laura Newman:
Queen’s Park is a nationally recognized cocktail bar that specializes in classic cocktails and hard-to-find spirits. It was also a finalist for the prestigious spirit award for Best New American Cocktail Brew.
Townley is a Birmingham native with a 15-year history running Birmingham bars and nightlife venues. He is also well-known throughout the Birmingham community for his work with local boards and charities.
Newman is a Brooklyn native and was the first woman in United States to win the prestigious Diagro World Class bartending Competition. She also placed second at the global finals in Berlin in 2018. Previously, she ran bars in New York City for eight years before moving to Birmingham in 2016. Learn more about her wins.
Dig This Cocktail Menu
What’s especially awesome about Neon Moon is the cocktail menu. It will consist of 6-10 drinks featuring updated versions of beloved cocktails from the 70s, 80s and 90s.
“The kind of drinks we’ll have on the menu are all drinks that inspire nostalgia. For many people, these were their first cocktails. These drinks are often derided by the ‘mixology’ community as overly sweet or too simple, but I think they can be awesome when made correctly. And they’re enduringly popular because at the end of the day, they’re crowd pleasers.”
