Did you know several schools in the Birmingham area are starting back up the week of August 5th? Where did our summer break go?
In preparation for the 2019/2020 school year, we asked Dr. Robin Pruitt, Jr. at Vestavia Family Dentistry and Facial Aesthetics to provide Bham Now with some useful “Back to School” tips to help kids take care of their dental needs before the classes begin.
Schedule a Cleaning Before Classes Begin
Everyone should schedule two dental cleanings a year, especially students. Now is the time to make this a six month habit. Schedule your cleaning before school begins and another around spring break. Besides, all the important health aspects, identifying early signs of tooth decay and gum disease, do you and your kid a favor – avoid the hassle of getting your kids out of school which means they have to make up for classroom work.
Establish Daily Brushing Habits
Children should brush their teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and before bed. You might have only two weeks, but let’s get in the habit of brushing (and flossing too) in the morning before school.
Get Ready for Sports
Along with school, several sports begin in August, such as football, soccer and volleyball. Wearing a properly fitted mouthguard while participating in organized sports, is essential to protecting your children’s teeth. When you schedule your teeth cleaning, ask the folks at Vestavia Family Dentistry and Facial Aesthetics about mouthguards.
Plan Healthy Meals, Snacks and Drinks
For the new school year resolve to pack a healthy lunches and snacks for your child. Healthy lunch items and snacks include grains, raw vegetables, yogurt or fruit. If your child eats from the school cafeteria, review healthy, balanced food choices with them before the first day of school. Cut back on sugary foods and soft drinks. Encourage your child to drink water.
Start the School Year Off Right
