EBSCO Industries, headquartered in Birmingham, has been honored with national recognition by its inclusion on Computerworld magazine’s prestigious annual list of ‘100 Best Places to Work in IT’. The only company in Alabama to be included on the list. Find out more about what makes EBSCO a top place to work and why it is a hit with tech professionals.
Who are EBSCO Industries?
EBSCO’s origins go as far back as 1930, when Elton B. Stephens Sr. began selling magazines to put himself through college and law school.
After earning a law degree, Stephens decided he could earn more money as a salesman than a lawyer and founded the Military Services Company (MSC) in 1944 to sell magazine subscriptions, personalized binders, and magazine racks to the armed forces.
After acquiring several businesses over the next decade, they were combined to form EBSCO Industries. Today, the company owns around 20 different businesses in several different industries – ranging from luxury real estate to insurance, outdoor products including game and land management and fishing, to library databases, electrical distribution sales to stand up desks.
Technology professionals are a key component to the success of these businesses, and EBSCO Industries has been recognized by Information Technology peers as one of 2019’s 100 Best Places to Work in IT: a place that attracts top tech talent, with stellar benefits, challenging projects and opportunity for employee growth.
ComputerWorld’s 100 Best Places to Work in IT
Computerworld magazine serves the global IT community with coverage of IT, emerging technology and current trends.
They publish several notable special reports each year, including the 100 Best Places to Work in IT.
For the past 25 years, the annual survey has identified the best places to work for IT professionals by asking readers and PR professionals to nominate organizations they consider great employers for IT workers.
Computerworld then ask nominated organizations that meet the basic criteria to have their employees participate in the survey. The results are released in June each year.
What do IT workers want? What sets companies apart to make it onto the 100 Best Places to Work in IT?
Computerworld’s goal is to highlight companies that attract skilled tech professionals by offering robust salaries, stellar benefits, and flexible, fast-paced work environments with access to leading technologies.
Mary Pratt of Computerworld reflects upon what IT professionals want and what sets companies apart,
“Salaries, paid time-off, health insurance, and retirement plans all help. But the things that really seem to set organizations apart are the benefits that reflect an attitude: we value our employees, we listen to our employees, we empower our employees, we want our employees to be challenged and grow professionally, and we want them to enjoy both their work and their personal lives”.
EBSCO sets itself apart in this respect by investing in their team and the communities in which they operate. For example, 15% of their pre-tax profits go to EBSCO Savings and Profit Sharing Trust, and 5% of pre-tax profits are devoted to nonprofit organizations.
This backs up the EBSCO Industries mission statement that is to “Create positive results in the people we employ, in the businesses we build, and in the communities where we work and live.”
Bham Now caught up with EBSCO Industries CIO, Ryan Loy
The Computerworld ‘100 Best Places to Work in IT’ honor is an indicator of positive culture which EBSCO Industries CIO, Ryan Loy, told us he is proud of,
“We’ve created a culture here in IT where professional development and trust in our people runs deep. The fact that this team drove a complete IT operating model transformation in less than 18 months while maintaining a positive culture is a remarkable achievement.”
On the award, Loy told Bham Now, “The credit of this award belongs to the outstanding Managers, Directors, and VPs. I am truly honored to be a part of this organization and work alongside such a dedicated team.”
