When you first hear the name “Closets by Design,” you most likely picture closets. As in, a place to put your clothes. Bet you didn’t know they design a bunch of other things, too, including home offices.

Meet Karen Oosterveen, the designer behind many a Birmingham home office

Karen Oosterveen’s one of a team of designers at Closets by Design Central Alabama. When a client decides they want to create something, she or another designer sits down with them to make a plan.

When she’s finished creating the initial plan, it goes first to an engineer, then to production manager Sidney Curtis. Sidney’s the guy who makes sure that everything gets made in house in a way that works.

Today we’re featuring Mike Harris’ Birmingham home office.

3 things we love about Mike Harris’ custom-built office

When Birmingham’s Mike Harris reached out to Closets by Design for a custom-designed home office, he was looking for a home for all the things. As you can tell, he got this, and more.

1. There’s a place for everything

No need to have piles of paper when you can file everything away neatly in easy-to-access drawers. If you look closely, there’s even a spot for a minature Vulcan statue. What’s not to love about that?

2. They paid attention to all the details

Some people don’t care about all the details. But for those who do, it’s dreamy to have just the right spot for every little thing. It’s a feeling of “ahhh . . . all is right in the world.”

And when it comes to productivity, knowing that each thing has a home makes a big difference. No need to go searching for a pen, or staples, or that file for tax prep when it’s time to get down to business.

3. It’s fun and functional—and it doesn’t look like this

Sure, Mike Harris could have cobbled together a home office with an old table, some filing cabinets, and some desk organizers. Haven’t we all done that at some point?

As practical as that approach is at a certain stage of life, it causes a lot of undue stress. There’s a constant feeling of clutter and impending disorganization that simply wastes a lot of time and energy. Not so with the clean lines and elegant systems Karen from Closets by Design brings to the table.
