The boxing fitness trend made its way from LA and New York to Birmingham thanks to four local boxing experts who founded Battle Republic in Homewood. When Bham Now headed out to Railroad Park for a photo shoot, here’s how my first conversation with one of the owners, Lindsey Miller, went:

Me: “I don’t think I’m tough enough to box.”
Lindsey: “Nope. You are.”

Then she gave me her fierce face. All kidding aside, Battle Republic’s certified trainers will be with you every step of the way, and it’s okay if you can’t do everything at first.

Rounding out the Battle Republic team are Lindsey’s co-founders Leah Drury, Kevin McLendon and Luan Nguyen, as well as trainers Brandon Snipes and Kristen Silverstein. (Learn about their kick-butt backgrounds here.)

What Is a Boxing-Inspired Workout?

First, there’s a DJ booth at Battle Republic. (What?!?) The off-the-chain playlist helps you power through your workouts.

Starting with “bag work,” you practice six key punches. If you’re worrying about your hands, don’t. Gel-cushioned wraps protect your hands while you punch away at state-of-the-art water bags.

Next, you hit the floor for exercises using kettlebells and your own body weight, as well as HIIT (high-intensity interval training). Whether you opt for a 25-minute or 45-minute class, you’ll raise your heart rate and get strong.

Grab a Buddy

Maddy Perry, creative director and designer at Aviate, is taking on the challenge at Battle Republic. So is her work buddy-turned-workout buddy Randall Porter, director of brand communications at Aviate.

Recruiting a buddy is not required, but you can help each other stay motivated. So ask a friend to join you for unlimited classes at Battle Republic, and you can both sweat it out to earn that sweet 20 percent discount at Aviate.

We headed to Railroad Park in downtown Birmingham for this fun photo shoot. (What can we say? It’s a good spot for fashion photography.) But you’ll find Battle Republic on the corner of 18th St S and 28th Ave S in the heart of Homewood.
