According to a City of Birmingham, the Green Springs Avenue Bridge will be closed to undergo needed repairs until March 2019.  The bridge is to the right of exit 258 if you are traveling south on I-65.

This is not the interstate overpass.

Reason for the bridge closure

City Engineer Fred Hawkins provides an up close view on why the bridge needs to be closed and repaired to keep motorists and residents safe.

The project will correct the way the bridge meets the road. The bridge sits over a set of railroad tracks and because of the bridge’s location and width, engineers have determined that it is best to close the bridge to correct the road issue.

There is a change in elevation when the bridge meets the road, which needs to be corrected. The current bridge/road situation has caused drainage issues and a bumpy ride for motorists when crossing the bridge. The improvement project will allow for better movement and more adequate drainage. This portion of Green Springs Avenue must be fully closed for improvements because the street is too narrow in the area to safely make improvements. No side roads will be closed during the project.

The work is being overseen by the city’s Department of Planning, Engineering and Permits (PEP) and construction handled by a contractor. Text BHMTRAFFIC to 888-777 to receive regular updates on the road work.
