Birmingham’s linear park concept has a name, and ALDOT wants all your ideas on July 17 and 24
Reading time: 2 minutes
Hi, Birmingham. Meet CityWalk BHAM. ALDOT wants your input on the park that’s going to be located on 10 blocks of public space from 15th St. N. to 25th St. N.
We’ve known for a hot minute that Birmingham is getting a new public park underneath the rebuilt Interstate 20/59 elevated highway through downtown Birmingham. So, what’s the next step?

They Want Your Input On The Park
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the City of Birmingham will listen to your ideas on July 17 at the Boutwell Municipal Auditorium. There will be three public-input sessions:
- 10 a.m. to noon
- Noon to 2 p.m.
- 5 to 7 p.m.
- Three more sessions will be held on July 24 at the Birmingham CrossPlex – Bill Harris Arena at the sames times listed above.
2. That’s Neat
According to ALDOT, the new support columns will be 165 feet apart (instead of the current 65 feet). There won’t be vehicle entrance or exit ramps, and the new bridge is also designed to reduce ambient highway noise.
Your CityWalk BHAM
If you’re interested in directing the future of the park, go to the public meetings and voice your opinion! Here are ideas I’ve heard so far: skate park, carousel, splash pad, fountains and outdoor art installations. What’s yours?
