Aviate is a brand you see everywhere. Literally, because the retailer is in over 150 cities across the United States (and a few internationally). The best part? It’s HQ’d right here in Birmingham.
In the beginning, owner Ben Lancaster had the idea to show pride in where he was from. Out came the idea to stitch felt letters on hats and print airport codes on apparel. There have been countless others who have tried to mimic the signature style. If it doesn’t say Aviate on the back, it’s not original. Speaking of original … BHM was the first airport code product made.
In the beginning, the shirts and baseball caps were only available in a dozen to 20 or so retailers, but after the boom in hometown pride became popular, so did Aviate.
Now you can find the products in more than 500 retailers repping more than 150 cities. Even ones with funny airport codes.
“I created the brand on the foundation of community and being proud of where you are from,” said Ben Lancaster, owner of Aviate. “Aviate also is a brand that allows people to show where they like to travel to.”
My favorite thing about wearing an Aviate hat? Whenever you’re traveling, folks know what you’re about. Plus, you don’t have to talk to them because they know exactly where you’re going or where you’re from.
Kidding. I love telling people where I live, and will do so at any chance I get. It’s even better when it can be done stylishly.
The classic airport code hats come in nine colors, with forest green and faded black being brand new color additions. Aviate is always adding new colors and cities to the ever-growing list.
If you’re going more for a local Ashton Kutcher vibe, I recommend the trucker style (available in black or grey).

Pizitz Pop-Up say what?
You read that correctly. Aviate will have a pop-up shop in The Pizitz for 2 months, with the grand opening tentatively this upcoming Monday, Nov. 20. You can buy your apparel there or order and have it shipped to you for out of stock cases. You can only fit so many products in one pop-up!
