Our schools are keeping access to over $100 million in funding!  Last night, Jefferson County voters decided to keep a .214% property tax in all 12 school systems.  A whopping 6% of eligible voters came to the polls, the rest presumably fine either way.

Larry Contri, Birmingham City Schools Interim Superintendent said that he “knew that the citizens of Birmingham… would meet the challenge.

The proposed renewal will remain in place for 30 years.  From the Jefferson County Schools website, the tax allows the schools to maintain a balanced budget and represents about a third of per-student spending, in addition to spending for extracurricular and special ed programs.

Jefferson County Schools is the second-largest school district in Alabama serving over 36,000 students in 56 different schools located throughout Jefferson County.

Great job, Jefferson County!
