Supply List
Watercolor Workshop
Rick Robertson Bio: Rick Robertson lives in Meridianville Alabama. He retired
from teaching after 20 years and is currently retired. Rick has pursued
watercolor painting for the last 7 years. He loves architecture and the light
displayed on it, and is seeking a loose style of painting, more impressionistic
than realistic. Rick is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of Alabama,
also a member of the American Watercolor Society.
Brushes: I use the Rosemary Synthetic short handle ROUND No. 10, 12 and 14
and Grumbacher Sables No. 14 or 16 sable brushes. I also have large Mop
brushes for large areas. I use a Simmons Script liner brush for detail and line
work. Make sure the brushes you use are comfortable to you- You DON’T have
to have the brand I use.
Paper: Canson and Strathmore papers WILL NOT WORK with my techniques for
the final painting, they could be used for checking a wash or mixing color. I
typically work on Arches Rough 140 lb. You can use Saunders Waterford 140 lb
Rough or 140 lb Fabriano Rough work quite well. We will be painting at a quarter
sheet or 11 x 14 mostly and if you prefer to use a watercolor block instead of
stretching your paper that is absolutely fine. I use BLOCKs almost exclusively
because I am lazy- I love not having to fool with it (tape) and just open and work.
Although it does cost more— it is worth it to me. Make sure you are using
ROUGH watercolor paper for the final painting. Have at least 3 sheets of 11
x 14 inch paper ready to use.
Paint: I use Daniel Smith TUBES for almost all my paint. Do Not Use Academy
or Student grade paints or cheap paints from Michaels or Hobby Lobby. Use
only Professional Grade Paint if you can afford it. I do have a few colors that are
Windsor Newton, Holbein they work just fine. USE only Tube paint- no pans. I
use a sponge to remove excess water from the brush or use paper towels.
Don’t buy Student Grade ANYTHING.
My Palette Colors:
Cad yellow, yellow ochre, yellow ochre gold, burnt sienna, raw sienna, burnt
umber, raw umber, van dyke brown, alizarin crimson, cadmium red light,
quinacridone burnt orange, cobalt turquoise, cerulean blue, cobalt blue,
ultramarine blue, indigo, moonglow, Windsor Newton dioxazine violet, or Daniel
Smith cobalt violet deep and opaque white. If you have different colors we can
work with them- but you need at lease a Cadmium Yellow, Alizarin Crimson Red
and Cobalt Blue in tubes.
My Palette:
Martin Mijello Airtight Leak Proof Fusion Watercolor 33-Well Palette about
$17.00, has 33 wells for paint and large mix compartments and a 4th larger one.
They make a smaller palette that has 18 wells and has the same amount of
mixing area for about $12.00 on Amazon. LOVE THESE. Amazon or Michaels
have them.
Water Bucket: any will work, something that holds a quart of water works well,
even Glad Storage containers. I use a bucket I got at Michaels that has 3
compartments, I love it.
Pencils: HB architectural 0.7 or 0.9 which is a little softer than a No 2 pencil or
regular No 2 pencil works great.
Paper towels and a spray bottle.
