Event Series Event Series: The Diary of Anne Frank

The Diary of Anne Frank

April 5, 2025 @ 8:00 pm

Opera Birmingham proudly presents The Diary of Anne Frank, an opera by Grigory Frid, bringing one of the most poignant and enduring stories of the 20th century to life. Performances will take place this Spring, offering audiences an intimate and deeply moving experience that honors the strength and spirit of Anne Frank. Performance dates are April 5th at 8:00 pm and April 6th at 2:30 pm at the Dorothy Jemison Day Theater at ASFA.

The production will feature Birmingham’s own Kathleen Farrar Buccleugh as Anne, and Lester Seigel will serve as the musical director.

Based on Anne Frank’s world-famous diary, this one-act opera captures the hopes, fears, and dreams of a young girl whose words continue to inspire generations. Grigory Frid’s hauntingly beautiful score provides a powerful backdrop for Anne’s reflections, as she navigates life in hiding with courage and unwavering optimism.

“As we present The Diary of Anne Frank, we recognize the importance of sharing this story with our community,” said Lynne Hutton, Managing Director of Opera Birmingham. “Anne’s voice remains a beacon of resilience, and through the universal language of music, we hope to provide a meaningful experience that encourages reflection and dialogue.”

This production aligns with Opera Birmingham’s commitment to presenting works that not only captivate but also spark important conversations about history, humanity, and the enduring power of hope. In addition to the performances, Opera Birmingham will host community engagement events, and pre- and post-show discussions to further explore the themes of the opera. Stage Director Laura Byland says, “Every page Anne writes represents an individual’s experience, an individual’s emotion, an individual’s idea being sent up almost prayer-like to heaven/the universe. In the end, those prayers, that story of the individual, is transformed into a universal story of the triumph of hope vs. despair, freedom vs. tyranny, and light vs the darkness.”

The Diary of Anne Frank will be performed in its original language with English supertitles. Tickets will be available through Opera Birmingham’s website and box office. For more information, visit www.operabirmingham.org or call (205) 322-6737.
