Matt Davis: Colorful at Birmingham Festival Theatre

Across 60 (sixty) countries and counting, hundreds of cities, and thousands of shows in over 25 years, Matt Davis has established himself as a comedy fan favorite and go-to performer for festivals in both the comedy and performing arts spaces around the world. On Saturday May 25th the Birmingham native brings to town selections from two new shows he will be touring across arts festivals later in the summer and through 2025.

This event will be in two halves as Matt Davis runs parts of two different shows in one evening, separated by an intermission.

One half will be selections from his touring show, Colorful, with material centered around rejecting both the ever-present “black and white” worldviews and their calls for compromise. Inspired by Matt’s previous show, BadFamiliar, written while performing across sixty (60) countries, the show takes heavy jabs at the US love affair with guns, world religions, and our human tendency to make things means what we want; all thru the lens of Matt’s upbringing in Alabama and his world travels.

The other half will be selections from his storytelling show, (I used to be) MORE FUN, which is focused on sobriety and the messiness of life. Inspired by Matt’s almost decade and a half of sobriety, but continued idiocy, the show focuses on what he calls “an excess of youth,” telling stories of drunkenly evading an arrest in Canada, to very-soberly being arrested in China, to stealing a cop car, impersonating a blind man, and other lighthearted WTFs.

Both shows are in late-stage preparations, along with a third show, for their production runs at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (Scotland) in August, where Matt will be performing each show everyday for the month long festival. (3 different shows, everyday for 20 days; Mondays dark, because Mondays are lame).

The show Colorful is also slated to be performed at the Reykjavik Fringe Festival in Iceland, the Tallinn Fringe Festival in Estonia, and the Hong Kong International Comedy Festival; with other appearances TBA.

This performance at Birmingham Festival Theatre is part of these preparations, and we are once again grateful to the theatre, staff, volunteers, and patrons in supporting us in this development process.
