Curious about encaustic? This workshop covers the basics of this wax-based paint and introduces you to myriad of techniques to explore – image transfer, incising, glazing, building and removing layers, and more. We will work on panels and watercolor paper on Day 1 and on Day 2 we will turn down the heat and make encaustic monotypes, using the hot palette as our printing plate. November is the perfect time to discover this warm and incredibly forgiving paint medium.

Appropriate for all experience levels.

Supply List
– 3 – 4 raw wood or Encausticbord panels to paint on, keep sizes small (6×6″, 5×7″, 8×8″) They may be flat or cradled; nothing previously painted, gessoed, or varnished. The wax adheres best to a raw wood or porous surface.
– 3 – 4 split-shank hake paint brushes in various sizes no larger than 1.5″. Must be
natural bristle. Check out Langnickel brand.
– 1 roll (1″ wide) painter’s tape for delicate surfaces.
– 1 roll VIVA brand paper towels or blue shop towels (cloth-like safer near heat).
– 1 roll wax paper for transporting work home.
– Sumi or Rice Paper (9.5″x13″) sold in sheets
– 1 full sheet 140# Watercolor paper, cut or torn down to 9×9″ squares OR a pack of
Khadi papers
