Reading time: 2 minutes

Birmingham-based artist Véro Vanblaere is kicking off the film festival circuit with an impressive first win.
Her four-minute micro-short film, Big Little Love, took home the Jury Award at the Atlanta Microshort Film Festival this past weekend. The film was selected as the unanimous favorite among 120 films screened, and was also nominated for Best Film—one of only a handful of top honors at the festival.

The Atlanta Microshort Film Festival is part of the Atlanta Film Series and showcases films under six minutes long. According to Véro, only about 10% of submissions are accepted, with roughly 120 films selected from more than 1,200 submissions.
“Our film won the jury award, which they told us was unanimous. Out of 120 movies, they absolutely loved our movie the best. We were very excited.”

While Véro is keeping the plot of Big Little Love under wraps (it’s only about four minutes long!) she shared that the film uses puppetry as the narrative device in the story.
The award marks the first stop on what Vero hopes will be a busy festival season. After submitting the film to nearly 30 festivals, more decisions are expected to roll in this fall.
“It’s a wonderful way to start the first festival circuit. It’s wonderful motivation to keep going and applying to more festivals. Hopefully it’ll be just as well received as this one. I hope it’s a good sign.”

On social media, Véro thanked the festival organizers, calling the experience “the most perfect way to start the festival circuit.”
Congratulations to Véro on the well-deserved recognition—we’ll be keeping an eye on Big Little Love as it continues its festival run. The film was submitted to Sidewalk Film Festival, so stay tuned for their festival lineup announcement soon.
