Tips to stay cool during a heat wave in Birmingham

These extreme temps are dangerous for vulnerable individuals, pets and those spending extended time outdoors.

Here are key tips to help you stay cool:

  • Slow down: Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day.
  • Dress for summer: Lightweight, light-colored clothing reflects heat and sunlight and helps your body maintain normal temperatures.
  • Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic fluids: Your body needs water to keep cool. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Spend more time in air-conditioned places: Air conditioning in homes and other buildings markedly reduces danger from the heat. Spending some time each day (during hot weather) in an air-conditioned environment affords some protection.

And don’t forget your pets!

  • Keep them hydrated: Refill their water bowls regularly, and ensure the water stays cool.
  • Provide shade or bring them indoors: Limit outdoor time and avoid leaving pets in hot or unshaded areas.
  • Protect their paws: Hot concrete can cause painful burns
