The Birmingham City Council recently approved the sale of approximately 25 acres in the Grand River Technology Park to make way for a new karting facility near iconic Barber Motorsports Park.

According to city leaders, the project will combine competitive training opportunities with entertainment experiences, creating a destination for everyone from casual drivers to serious racers.

Why Bham makes the perfect place for new recreation

The undeveloped site sits along Barber Motorsports Parkway, an area already known for its deep ties to Alabama’s automotive and racing culture.

Developers say the facility will offer something unique to the Southeast while helping introduce more people to the world of motorsports.

“We’re excited about this project because it builds on the success of Barber Motorsports Park, which has already established this area as a regional destination. Anytime we can leverage an existing asset to attract more visitors and generate economic activity, it’s a win for the entire Birmingham region.”

Hunter Williams, Birmingham City Council

What it could mean for Birmingham

City officials expect the development to create around 20 jobs and generate additional spending at nearby hotels, restaurants and local businesses as visitors travel to the area for events and experiences.

The project also gives new life to land within the Grand River Technology Park.
