Celebrated Nigerian artist unveiling new exhibit at East Village Arts in Birmingham this weekend

One of Nigeria’s most influential contemporary artists is opening a brand-new exhibition in Birmingham this weekend. Celebrated artist and cultural ambassador Prince Tunde Odunlade will be unveiling his latest work at East Village Arts with a reception and interactive performance on Saturday, June 27.

With a multidisciplinary career spanning more than five decades, Prince Tunde Odunlade is an internationally recognized artist known for his his experimental batik textiles, fiber art, linocut and woodcut prints and what he calls “floating graphic” techniques—layered, improvisational works that blur the line between printmaking, painting and textile design. Odunlade’s art—which explore themes of community, spirituality, migration and collective memory—is held in major collections worldwide, including the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Beyond visual art, Odunlade is a poet, musician, educator and cultural organizer who has led workshops and residencies at institutions like Alabama’s Stillman College and UCLA, and co-founded the Toki Memorial Art Centre in Ibadan to mentor emerging artists.

Odunlade has long had a connection to Birmingham, first visiting in 1986 during a workshop at Stillman college. Since then, Odunlade has returned repeatedly for various exhibitons and collaborative projects, including recent exbibitions at East Village Arts in 2023 and 2025.

The reception for Prince Tunde Odulande’s new exhibition begins at 6:30PM on Saturday, June 27, followed by by a live performance at 7PM that blends visual art, music and storytelling and in Odulande’s signature style.
