Irondale residents will soon have a new way to get around town—and it’s actually affordable at just $1.50 per ride.
Beginning July 1, the City of Irondale is launching MAX On-Demand Transit, a new micro-transit service designed to provide affordable, flexible transportation throughout the city while connecting passengers to the Birmingham bus system and the Woodlawn Intermodal Center.
How MAX On-Demand Transit works
The service will operate Monday through Saturday from 7AM–7PM with booking available through a smartphone app or by phone.
Each ride will cost $1.50.
What led to Irondale’s MAX On-Demand Transit?
The launch follows a citywide transportation survey the received more than 535 responses from residents showing strong interest in expanded transportation option.
Here’s a closer look:
- Nearly 66% of respondents said they would use the service at least occasionally.
- About 20% said they would use it daily or several times each week.
Residents also identified retail destinations like Publix as one of their biggest transportation needs, while more than 72% said they preferred booking rides through a smartphone app.
On July 1, the new service will kick off a 15-month pilot program fully funded through a $513,750 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.
Also partnering with the City of Irondale is MAX Transit/Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA).
“Transportation is about more than getting from point A to point B—it’s about connecting people to jobs, healthcare, shopping, education and opportunity. The residents of Irondale made it clear through our survey that there is a need for this service.”
