The Vestavia City Council is considering a sale tax rebate proposal to help redevelop the former Cahaba Heights Winn-Dixie site into a Walmart Neighborhood Market.

Walmart currently has the 3925 Crosshaven Drive property under contract. Vacant since May of 2025, the once popular Winn-Dixie store unexpectedly closed with little notice or explanation.

The first reading of the Walmart  proposal to redevelop the site is today. Citizens are welcome to make comments at the end of today’s meeting. A public hearing and potential vote will occur on  June 15th.

According to a summary of the Walmart proposal, prepared by Vestavia City City manager Jeff Downes, the following is what’s happening with the property.

  • A new approximately 45,000-square-foot Walmart Neighborhood Market
  • The existing building, parking and drainage infrastructure is considered obsolete by Walmart, requiring a complete demolition
  • Walmart has indicated its intent to invest a minimum of $20 million in land acquisition, demolition, construction, and related site improvements necessary to make the property operational
  • Walmart is asking the city to invest $3 million to assist in the redevelopment.

The $3 million sales tax rebate is over a 10 year span.

The Vestavia Hills City Council meeting is tonight, June 1, 6:00PM at City Hall. To participate remotely: Video-conference – https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5539517181
