MAX Transit Saturday service returns to downtown Birmingham
Reading time: 2 minutes

Getting around downtown Birmingham on the weekend is about to get a lot easier. Starting Saturday, June 6, MAX Transit is officially bringing back Saturday service for its popular Downtown MAX On-Demand zone.
The app-based microtransit service will operate on Saturdays from 10AM to 6PM, providing a flexible, affordable way to navigate the city center just as weekend activity picks up.
Unlike traditional fixed-route buses, MAX On-Demand functions like a localized ride-sharing service. Passengers book a ride through a smartphone app, and a vehicle routes dynamically to pick up passengers heading in the same direction. It bridges the gap between major transit lines and individual destinations, linking riders directly to restaurants, shopping, weekend work shifts and community hubs.
The need for quality transit doesn’t stop
Charlotte Shaw, executive director and CEO of MAX Transit, emphasized that transportation needs do not pause when the workweek ends:
“The return of the Saturday downtown MAX On-Demand service helps create greater access to jobs, shopping, appointments, entertainment, and other important weekend destinations for our riders.”
The downtown expansion joins several existing MAX On-Demand zones that already offer Saturday hours across the metro area:
- Mountain Brook Zone: 6AM – 8PM
- East & Airport Zones: 5AM – 9PM
- North Birmingham Zone: 5:30AM – 8PM
How to book your ride
Riders can schedule a pickup within the designated downtown zone using the MAX Connect mobile app, which is available on both Apple and Android platforms. The app lets users book trips on the fly, track their vehicle in real time and manage transit fares.
If you prefer not to use a smartphone, you can also book a ride by calling MAX Transit customer service directly at 205-521-0101.
