Earlier this week, U.S. Soccer head coach Mauricio Pochettino announced the USMNT’s 26-player roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Among familiar faces like Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson and Tyler Adams, Pochettino selected Birmingham native Chris Richards to anchor the defense for the national team.

A 6-foot-2 defender, Richards began playing soccer at a young age in Birmingham and has since appeared in 36 international matchups. Some of Richard’s highlights from his time on the national team include:

  • A goal in the 2-0 victory over Canada in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League Final
  • Named 2025 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year

Earlier this year, Richards traveled back to his hometown to help unveil the nation’s first FIFA Arena right here in Birmingham, along with Birmingham Legion FC, Soccer Forward Foundation, Kulture City and U.S. Soccer.
