Severe weather in the Birmingham metro area unfortunately happens often and no one is immune.

For example, since 2021, tornadoes have touched down locally in Fultondale, Homewood, Mountain Brook and Shelby County.

Thatโ€™s why the state of Alabamaโ€™s severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday matters.

This yearโ€™s sales tax holiday begins this weekend on Friday, February 20 and ends  Sunday, February 22.

Here is how it works.

During Alabamaโ€™s annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, no state sales or use tax is due on certain items you may purchase to deal with severe weather.

Below is a list of *eligible items:

  • Cell phone chargers/batteries
  • Portable radio or NOAA radio
  • Flashlights + lanterns
  • Plastic sheeting + tarps
  • Duct tape
  • Plywood
  • Non-electric food storage cooler

  • First aid kit
  • Smoke detector
  • Gas tank

*Covered at $94 or less, per item

In addition, any portable generator priced at $1,564 or less will be tax exempt.
