Legacy Prep, a Birmingham charter school founded in 2017, has officially opened their new intermediate school campus for grades 4-8 at the former A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club.

The new state-of-the-art facility marks a major expansion of the school’s mission to provide “high-quality, college-preparatory education rooted in leadership and entrepreneurship,” the school said.

“This is more than a building. It’s a promise. It’s a promise to our students that they will have a place to learn and grow. We chose the name ‘Legacy’ for a reason, and legacy isnt something that you adhere to. It is something that you create. It is a living story that we write to ourselves, of our choices and the dreams that we care about.”

Dr. Reneta Johnson, Legacy Schools Superintendent & Head of Schools

Legacy Prep broke ground in 2024 to renovate the building into an expansion for the charter school. The project cost $5 million, according to the Legacy Prep Intermediate flipbook.

Legacy is the first public charter school in Birmingham, and since opening their doors to about 100 kindergarten through 1st graders, has grown to serve nearly 600 K-8 students. Of those students:

  • 97% qualify for free/reduced-price lunch
  • 10.4% have special learning needs and qualify for an Individual Education Plan (IEP)
  • 96% identify as Black/African-American

The newly renovated building is filled with vibrant shades of teal and orange and inspiring artwork adorning the walls.

One exciting aspect of the new school are the Ed Farm labs, designed and operated by the local education nonprofit. The innovative spaces allow students to experience hands-on learning with tools to record podcasts, mix music, explore virtual reality, film videos and more.

“These two rooms that you see here are collectively called the ‘Den of Discovery.’ In these rooms, students should be able to make content to change their lives, to change other people’s minds.”
