Matcha, matcha, matcha! (That was my attempt at a Brady Bunch pun)

Made from finely ground green tea leaves, matcha is packed with antioxidants and offers a smooth, slightly sweet flavor with a hint of caffeine. Whether you’re a longtime fan of this earthy tea or just discovering it, Birmingham has plenty of cafés and coffee shops serving up delicious matcha creations.

Read on for some of our favorites.

1. Cala Coffee

Visit Cala in Cahaba Heights or downtown, in Birmingham’s theater district. (Cala Coffee / Facebook)

Cala is one of my favorite spots to stop for a pick-me-up, and their matcha latte is top tier. When I feel like switching it up from the standard matcha latte, I’ll go for a matcha lemonade.

2. Caveat Coffee

Caveat Coffee, a cozy spot nestled in downtown Homewood, is the perfect place to hang out and try a caffeinated concoction.

Caveat likes to get creative, featuring drinks like the honey lavender matcha latte and prickly pear matcha latte.

3. Domestique

Recently named some of the world’s best coffee, you know we had to add Domestique to the list.

Beyond its rich, ethically-sourced coffee beans, Domestique also makes a mean matcha latte. Whether you get it hot or iced, this matcha is perfectly earthy and creamy.

4. June Coffee

No one does it like June, a local hot spot for coffee, breakfast and of course—matcha!

June offers seasonally-rotating fun twists on the classic matcha latte. Here’s their menu for this Spring:

  • Strawberry Spring—Mizuba Matcha, Minor Figures strawberry oat milk, dragon fruit, strawberry water
  • Baby Blue—Blue matcha, milk, blueberry hibiscus syrup, sweetened cold foam, orchid flower

Plus, after getting your matcha, you can pop into Last Call Baking next door for a sweet treat.

5. Punch Love Coffee

Located at MAKEbhm in Avondale, Punch Love isn’t your average coffee shop. They carry several coffee and tea roasters from all around the country for an eclectic mix of flavor profiles.

Their cozy, intimate space is the perfect place to strike up a conversation with a fellow matcha lover.

6. Seeds

Seasonal lattes at Seeds in West Homewood. (Seeds Coffee / Facebook)

These stunning lattes are from Seeds, a cafe and coffee roaster located in West Homewood.

Seeds is ranked among the top coffee shops in the world, and for good reason—ethically-sourced beans, gorgeous glassware and a cozy atmosphere—what’s not to love?

Try the bergamot matcha latte, and thank me later.

7. Grounds

Grounds on 2nd Ave N is another go-to coffee shop for me. Their matcha latte is my favorite one in town—not too sweet, and perfectly light and creamy.

Plus, I love shopping clothing and accessories at basic next door while I wait for my order.

8. Adam & Eve Café

This new café in Five Points is known for its vegan-friendly menu and fresh made-to-order juice and smoothies, but it’s also a great place to grab a matcha.

Are you more of a make-it-yourself tea drinker? They also sell loose, ceremonial-grade matcha powder.

9. Teaspoon

Teaspoon, located at The Summit, serves some of the most unique matcha creations in town. Some menu highlights include the matcha latte with strawberry and Vietnamese coffee topped with matcha.

10. Whammy Coffee

Whammy Coffee may be new in town, but they know what they’re doing when it comes to great coffee and tea.

We tried the blueberry matcha latte—a perfect blend of sweet, fruity and creamy.
