ALDOT resurfacing I-59: What Birmingham metro travelers need to know

Have plans to travel at night on I-59 near Gadsden?

Be prepared for a few delays.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) launched a major resurfacing project Sunday evening on I-59 that will include milling and resurfacing of both roadways near Gadsden. The project will also include the installation ofl guardrail and retrofit bridge rails. 

The $7.8M initiative is expected to last a little more than a year.

I-59: Where and when the work is done

For Birmingham travelers going north, the resurfacing will begin a few miles past Springville on the St. Clair/Etowah County line. The work ends one mile north of the US-431/US-278 interchange in Attalla.

If you are traveling south of the work, be prepared for delays after the Gadsden/Noccalula Falls exit.

In total, the resurfacing project is 8.5 miles long.

Expect lane closures from 6PM to 6AM Sunday through Thursday nights.

According to ALDOT traffic data the section of  I-59 they are working on carries about 33,000 vehicles a day between SR-77 and I-759.
