10 Black-owned businesses in Birmingham to celebrate this Black History Month [Part 2]

Last week, we told you about 12 black-owned businesses we love—but just was just the beginning!

Here are 10 more Black-owned businesses in The Magic City that you can support this Black History Month and all year long.

1. SLIDE Café

Chef Raquel Ervin, who appeared on Food Network’s Chopped, is one of the Birmingham area’s premier restauranteurs. Ervin is the chef behind SLIDE Café in Five Points as well as the former SMOKE Bistro at The Pizitz.

At SLIDE, Ervin serves a tasty selection of sandwiches and appetizers like the 12-hour brisket slider and chicken pesto slider.

2. Hit Different! BBQ

Formerly a popular food truck in the Birmingham area, Hit Different! BBQ opened its first brick-and-mortar location in Pelham in 2024.

Owned by Zanetta Roberson, this barbecue joint serves classic soul food favorites like the Bangin’ Bama Cheesesteak and Poppin’ Porkchop Sandwich.

3. JB’s House of Fashion

Owned by Ernest “JB” Brown Sr., JB’s House of Fashion is one of the oldest and most reliable stores in Birmingham for men’s fashion.

They carry a wide variety of men suits, shirts, blazers, ties, accessories and hats for any occasion.

4. A-Train Station

One of Birmingham’s favorite food trucks, A-Train is famous for its wings, quesadillas and other tasty Southern comfort food.

5. Do Not Disturb

Kelli Caulfield and London Jackson, the restauranteurs behind NOLA Ice-Broad St Peaux Boys at the Pizitz Food Hall, opened Do Not Disturb in 2024.

The concept is an elevated sports bar located just off Lakeshore Parkway near Lowe’s. With plenty of TVs and seating, the perfect place to sit back and watch games, have a beer or cocktail and enjoy creative dishes.

6. Birmingham Times

Did you know the Birmingham Times is a Black-owned newspaper?

The publication was founded in 1964 by Jesse Lewis Sr. in order to give the local Black community a greater voice during the civil rights struggle. Today, it covers a variety of local news in education, community, business and sports.

7. Etheridge Brothers Barbershop

Founded in 1970 by Willie Etheridge Sr. and Joe Etheridge, Etheridge Brothers Barbershop has been cutting hair in the Birmingham community for over 50 years.

According to their Facebook page, they’ve mentored hundreds of barbers and stylists that have gone on to open their own businesses—their motto is “If you don’t get it here, you don’t have it!

8. Mama ‘Nem Southern Kitchen

Owned by Chris Hollaman, Mama’ Nem Southern Kitchen opened near Rickwood Field in 2024. This highly-anticipated soul food restaurant specializes in comfort food with a fine dining atmosphere, serving everything from biscuits and gravy to steak and lobster dinner.

“I wanted to build a place where people can start their day off with a hot meal—think biscuits, gravy and coffee—in the morning and come back in the evening to get a good looking, delicious dinner at an affordable price point. I’m so excited to cater to this type of vibe here in my home.”

9. Green Acres Café

With four Birmingham-area locations from downtown to Ensley, Green Acres Café is a hot spot for chicken wings and other Southern favorites. Don’t skip the fried green tomatoes!

10. Dirty Red Food Truck

Owned by Nelesha Dale, Dirty Red Food Truck is known for loaded fries, quesadillas, burgers and my favorite—strawberry lemonade. You can catch the truck across the Birmingham area, from Forestdale to Woodlawn and beyond.
