Have you ever wanted to participate in a tree planting or local neighborhood cleanup in February, but were afraid it would be too chilly or rainy? There’s no need to worry about the weather this weekend (February 8-9).

According to the National Weather Service, the temperatures are expected to be spring-like in the upper 70’s with a little cloud cover. Perfect tree planting and cleanup volunteer weather!

Below is a list of four events you can support this weekend.

1. Birmingham Squadron/Cool Green Trees in Norwood

Fans of the Birmingham Squadron can spend an afternoon with their favorite player at a tree-planting event in Birmingham’s Norwood community on Feb. 8 from 1:00PM to 4:00PM.

The event is set to be held at Norwood Community Center (located at 1330 28th Street North in Birmingham) in collaboration with the Birmingham Parks and Recreation Board.

All fans are invited to attend the event and meet Squadron players who will also be on-site planting trees.

The tree planting event is organized by Cool Green Trees, a two-year-old program that aims to combat climate change in communities living in Urban Heat Islands, hot spots in our communities leading to health disparities and environmental challenges.

2. Friends of Avondale Park Workday

One of The Magic City’s most historic and beautiful parks needs your help. The Friends of Avondale Park have corganized a workday to trim back the overgrown weeds, trees and brush on the hillside near the Little Miss Fancy statue.

Please bring your own rakes, hedge trimmers, saws and other tools on Saturday, February 8th. Work begins at 8:00AM and lasts till 10:00AM. Volunteers are asked to gather at the Little Miss Fancy statue on 40th Street.
