Finding meaningful employment can be a challenge for people with disabilities, but a remarkable partnership between Easterseals of the Birmingham Area and Edgar’s Bakery is creating life-changing opportunities.
This inclusive internship blends job training, mentorship and real-world work experience to equip young individuals with the skills and confidence they need to thrive in the workforce.
We sat down with employees Devin and Makayla to learn more about the program and what they enjoy about their jobs.
What does Easterseals do?
Since 1950, Easterseals has championed the inclusive treatment of disabled youth and adults in the Birmingham community. A key part of their mission is a workforce development program where disabled adults are placed in entry-level roles throughout the area, offering them a safe and meaningful experience.
Program participants can build skills like:
- Critical thinking + problem solving
- Interpersonal development + communication
- Job readiness
- Time management
According to Easterseals Development Director Katelyn Bruhn, joining forces with Edgar’s Bakery was a perfect match.
“Edgar’s has been a great place for our internship program because they have multiple locations and many types of jobs. They’ve also been incredibly beneficial and inclusive of our participants.
There’s a plethora of locations to place our folks so that they get the best experience, from Homewood to Trussville to Pelham and more.”

Meet Devin & Makayla
Devin and Makayla are two all-star interns who were placed with Edgar’s Bakery’s Homewood location through Easterseals.
They offer a helping hand with washing dishes, bussing tables and other bakery tasks. Plus, their positive attitudes and smiling faces add something special to the day-to-day work atmosphere.
“Edgar’s Bakery is so great about working with Easterseals and promoting the employment of people with disabilities.
They understand that people with disabilities are some of the most dependable and loyal people you can hire, and they take great pride in their work.”
Wendy Lawless, Employment Specialist, Easterseals
Did I mention Devin and Makayla both have a bit of a sweet tooth? Makayla’s go-to treat from Edgar’s Bakery is the caramel cupcake, while Devin can’t resist a classic chocolate chip cookie.
