Birmingham has finally been experiencing some chilly winter weather the past few weeks but it comes on the heels of the warmest November ever recorded in the area.

Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that 2024 saw the warmest November in recorded history for the state and the second-warmest in Birmingham behind November of 1985.

The average temperature in Alabama last month was 61.6 degrees Fahrenheit, more than 8 degrees higher from November’s average temperature in the state during the 20th century.

On track for warmest year on record

Overall, 2024 has been one the hottest year on record in Birmingham according to the NOAA report.

“Looking at Huntsville and Birmingham observations, both of those cities at the end of November are on track for the warmest year on record.”

The report also says the 36-month span from December 2021 through November 2024 was the warmest ever recorded in Birmingham, showing that the trend is now stretching out over a significant period of time.
