Miles and Lawson State Community College among top HBCUs with outstanding economic impact report

In September, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) released its 2024 HBCU Economic Impact Report.

This report is a data-driven analysis that highlights the contributions HBCUs make to their students, local communities and the nation at large.

“Transforming Futures: The Economic Engine of HBCUs” has made vital reports on the impact of historically black universities that have made a huge contribution to both their students and the community.

Each report includes statistical findings of the university’s economic footprint as well as their regional influence. The economic report suggests both Miles and Lawson State Community College have made significant contributions to Birmingham, such as creating more jobs and racking up in lifetime earnings.

1. Miles College

  • Miles College generates around $69.3 million in total economic impact for local and regional economics.
  • The university has created more than 640 jobs with 286 out of 355 being on-campus.
  • A Miles graduate can expect to earn over $1 million in additional income due to college credential.

In a recent press report, Bobbie Knight, President of Miles College, expressed her excitement with these new numbers and how Miles will continue to make a healthy impact on the community.

2. Lawson State Community College

  • Lawson State Community College generates around $112.6 million in total economic impact for local and regional economics.
  • The college generates around 954 jobs for students and faculty with 351 on-campus jobs and 603 off-campus jobs.
  • A Lawson graduate can expect to earn over 24% more with college credentials than without college credit.
