Inside the NEW Black Market Bar + Grill, opening soon in Avondale [PHOTOS]
Reading time: 4 minutes
Earlier this year, Bham Now reported that Black Market Bar + Grill was moving from its longtime home in Five Points South to the former Avondale Common House space in Avondale.
With the grand opening of the new Black Market Bar + Grill location just around the corner, we caught up with owners George Cowgill and Elise Yarbrough to learn more.
Black Market Bar + Grill is a Birmingham original
Founded in 2009 by business partners George Cowgill and Elise Yarborough, Black Market Bar + Grill quickly became a staple at Shops of the Colonnade on Hwy 280, thanks to its eclectic flair, tasty cocktails and mouthwatering food menu.
In 2012, the duo opened a second location in the Shepherd Sloss building, across the street from Chick-fil-A in Five Points South. A few years later, Black Market Bar & Grill relocated to 1035 20th St S, where it has remained for nearly a decade.
In late 2023, Avondale Common House merged with Ferus on 41st—freeing up the former Avondale Common House space at 4100 3rd Avenue South. George and Elise lept at the opportunity
“Both George and I live in neighborhoods near Avondale, so we’re very familiar with the area and the businessowners here. We love music, so having Avondale Brewing Co., Firehouse, Saturn and more all within walking distance is a dream. We couldn’t be more excited to open our doors to this incredible community.”

- D’zire Bar & Lounge
- Miracle Pizza Co.
- Avondale Brewing Co.
- 41st Street Pub & Aircraft Sales
- Elysian Gardens

- Ferus on 41st/Avondale Common House

Inside the new Black Market Bar + Grill
If you’ve been to a Black Market Bar + Grill before, you’ll feel right at home inside the new Avondale location.
“I always tell people, I decorate this place like I decorated my childhood bedroom. Punk rock, freak show, horror, posters, skateboards, you name it.
I’m always keeping my eye out for new things to add to the walls, whether its things I find in abandoned buildings or antiques. My daugher calls it ‘maximalist’ decor.”

Regulars will be pleased to know that the new Black Market Bar + Grill will have the same hours and menu as the Five Points South location—with a few new additions.
“We have several new items we’re excited to add to our menu, including the new ‘Smash Mouth Tacos.’
We won’t be hosting live music anymore, but our neighbors—Firehouse, Avondale Brewing Co. and Saturn—probably put on 200+ shows a year.
We’re focusing on what we’re good at: great food and drinks.”

Black Market Bar + Grill opening soon in Avondale
According to George Cowgill, the new Black Market Bar + Grill is set to open in Avondale in the first week of August pending an approved health and safety inspection.
“The Avondale community is something special. We’re not even open yet, but Avondale has welcomed us with open arms.
I have people stop me every day to ask when we will be open.
I love being part of this community and I think Black Market Bar + Grill is going to do very well in Avondale.”
