Birmingham’s Southside is one of the most popular areas to eat, live and play. It’s also steeped in history.

We caught up with Logan Day and Kelsey Carney with H2 Real Estate to learn more about this vibrant part of town, some places to check out and more.

“A small-town vibe with big-city accessibility. It’s the best of both worlds!”

This is how Logan and Kelsey describe Birmingham’s Southside, and it’s quite perfect.

Southside is one of Birmingham’s oldest communities, drawing people in with its history and charm since the late 1800s.

Situated on the hilly, forested slopes of Red Mountain, it spans from Railroad Park to Vulcan Park and Museum and includes two beloved neighborhoods—historic Glen Iris and eclectic 5 Points South.

It’s also home to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s campus and the city’s world-renowned medical district.

5 Points South is known by locals as the heartbeat of Southside due to its hot culinary scene and energetic nightlife.

Originally founded as the Town of Highland in 1887, 5 Points South is on the National Register of Historic Places and was one of Birmingham’s first suburbs with cable cars.

“I love the amount of original, locally-owned restaurants and bars, especially in 5 Points South.

Birmingham is a community that truly loves to serve and nurture each other, and our nationally-renowned food and cocktail bar scene shows that.”

Glen Iris

Glen Iris rests next to UAB’s campus, making it highly convenient for students and faculty to walk or drive to school and work.

What’s special about the Glen Iris area of Southside is that it’s held tight to much of its historic character.

This can be seen in many of its homes, which were built between 1901-1940.

While Birmingham’s 5 Points South neighborhood is known for food, entertainment and nightlife, Glen Iris is loved for its small, locally-owned restaurants and beautiful parks.

“Southside’s Glen Iris neighborhood is good at keeping it local. It’s easy to support your community because half of the shops and eateries are small local businesses located right outside your door.”
