JCDH heard a plea for more sustainable initiatives and decided to act on it.

They aim to bring in more resources and expertise, thus partnering with Miles College to create an “unstoppable force.”

“This is not about one community in Jefferson County, this is the whole county. Miles College is going to be right alongside every community member in Jefferson County and helping us address these needs and bringing them valuable resources in where they are needed the most.

Dr. David Hicks, Health Officer, Jefferson County Department of Health

This is just the beginning of what is hoped to be a successful plan to tackle environmental changes.

JCDH and Miles College will be seeking ways to engage with the community and teach better practices that will be beneficial in the long run.

“This partnership will also generate job opportunities and environmental fields associated with public health projects and county residents, fostering economic growth and sustainability. We are committed to engaging students, residents and stakeholders in addressing various environmental concerns such as resiliency, flooding, storm water pollution, air quality and green spaces.”

Bobbie Knight, President of Miles College

Upcoming projects

Both Hicks and Knight have ambitious goals. They provided us with a list of potential initiatives.

They include:

  • “Purple-air” monitors in k-12 schools
  • Combatting illegal dump sites
  • Writing grants to fund sustainable initiatives
  • Flooding issues

Each one of these projects will provide invaluable experience + impact communities.

We can’t wait to see what this new partnership brings to the community!
